Mary Jane was educated at St Theresa's Convent, Minehead, UK. In 1955 she won a scholarship to the Somerset College of Art where she studied for two years.
From 1958 to 1960 she completed the National Diploma in Design and the Oxford University Diploma in Fine Arts at Ruskin College, Oxford. During this period she consistently won prizes for painting, judged by leading London art critics and nationally known artists.

Mary Jane taught art at St. Audrey's School, Willeton during 1961. Further study followed in Spain, Greece, Malta, Germany and France. In Malta, in 1963, she taught art at the Sacred Heart Convent for nine months.
After nine years study and travel, Mary Jane held two successful exhibitions in England before emigrating to Australia in 1968 where she settled in Perth, Western Australia.

During 1970 - 71 she conducted several adult education courses in art and in particular she taught at the Albany Summer School in 1970. Several commissions followed as a private tutor to both young and adult students. She was appointed Artist in Residence at Tresillian Community Centre, Nedlands in 1983.
