SAM BROADHURST:
After completing a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University
of Melbourne, Sam has worked as a Research Assistant at the
Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute intermittently for the last
17 years. During this period he pursued his interest in art
and his ambition to make a career of painting.
In 1987 he travelled for six months throughout Europe to study
the works of the Great Masters, including Monet, Degas, Turner
and Constable. Influenced by these works he developed his own
style of painting and drawing. Returning to Australia with new-found
inspiration and enthusiasm, Sam held a number of successful
solo exhibitions and also exhibited in Paris in 1988, at the
Societies des Pastellistes des France.
In 1991 he won the Victorian Artists Society Spring Exhibition
and following this, won the Camberwell Rotary Travel Award in
1992 for his paintings and oils. This grant enabled him to travel
throughout Russia, Scandinavia, Holland, Belgium and France
to further expand his knowledge of art.
Sam has exhibited work in a diverse range of media, including
oils, watercolour, pastels and etchings, each offering their
own distinctive characteristics. Using oils has allowed him
to explore the textural qualities with palette knives and brushes.
Whilst with pastels, details and subtle vibrancy of colour can
be achieved. His experience in the field of chemistry allows
him to make his own pastels from pigments, especially chosen
for their light fastness, durability and colour.
Sam's understanding of art, his research background and
his technical skills, combine to produce a unique mixture of
observation, patience, determination and passion, necessary
for successfully expressing his talent as a traditional artist.
